Types of solar water heaters: active vs. passive solar hot watersystems
Solar water heaters can be classified into two main types: active and passive solar hot water systems.
Active solar water heaters use pumps or other mechanical devices to circulate water or a heat transfer fluid through the system. These systems require electricity to operate and are generally more expensive than passive systems. Active systems can be further divided into two subtypes: direct circulation and indirect circulation systems.
Indirect circulation system
Direct circulation system
In a direct circulation system, water from the storage tank is pumped through solar collectors and then back into the storage tank. This type of system is best suited for areas with mild climates.
In an indirect circulation system, a heat transfer fluid (usually a mixture of water and antifreeze) is pumped through solar collectors and then through a heat exchanger in the storage tank. The heat from the fluid is transferred to the water in the storage tank, which is then used for domestic hot water. This type of system is more expensive than a direct circulation system, but it is more efficient in colder climates.
Passive solar water heaters, on the other hand, do not use any mechanical devices to circulate water or a heat transfer fluid. Instead, they rely on natural convection or thermosiphon to circulate the water through the system. Passive systems are generally less expensive and more reliable than active systems. Passive systems can also be divided into two subtypes: integral collector storage (ICS) and thermosyphon systems.
In an ICS system, the solar collector and the storage tank are combined into a single unit. This type of system is suitable for areas with mild climates.
In a thermosyphon solar water heater system, the solar collector is installed on the roof, and the storage tank is located below it. As the water in the collector heats up, it rises and flows into the storage tank, creating a natural circulation loop. This type of system is more suitable for areas with colder climates.
The choice between an active or passive solar water heater system will depend on factors such as the climate, the size of the household, and the budget.
